Living in a Speech to Print World: An SLP's Appreciation of Structured Linguistic Literacy

A Talk by Leanne Dall

About this Talk

Structured Linguistic Literacy approaches rely on the innate organization of oral language to teach the written code and organize sound-symbol correspondences. HOWEVER, what happens when our learners with speech and language difficulties don't yet have an established and organized oral language system?

Is Speech to Print still effective? Learners with speech sound disorders and Developmental Language Disorder are twice as likely to be diagnosed with a reading disability than students without speech or language disabilities.

We will explore why and how a speech to print approach optimally supports this population in particular; reframing SLL's ability to assist in building the foundation of strong oral language for our students. SLPs and Literacy Interventionists will leave with a new perspective and understanding that will strengthen the impact of their work.
