Where Does the Science of Reading Go Next?
A Talk by Dr. Mark Seidenberg (Professor Emeritus, University of Wisconsin-Madison)
About this Talk
The “science of reading” approach as codified in many state laws and practiced in many classrooms relies heavily on explicit instruction in the components of reading.
In this talk I argue that the approach needs to achieve a better balance between explicit instruction and implicit learning, which allows children to learn from a broad range of experiences. This re-setting of the dial would make it easier for teachers to teach effectively and children to succeed in learning to read.
